A Beginner’s Guide to Sushi: Rolls, Nigiri, and Beyond

One of the best parts of Japanese culinary tradition is sushi, which is known for its fresh flavors, delicate presentation, and bottomless variety. Although it looks simple, sushi actually has a very rich history and has an incredible number of styles one can dig into. For instance, this may be your first experience with sushi or your second try at the subject matter, but learning the basics makes a remarkable difference in totally enjoying this delectable art form.

What Is Sushi?

Sushi is about seasoned rice usually paired with fish, seafood, vegetables, or anything else as its primary character. The vinegar, sugar, and salt flavor the rice, giving it a slightly tangy taste that enhances when combined with other toppings or fillings. It is a huge misconception that sushi equals raw fish-it actually has many other cooked and even vegetarian options.

Popular Sushi Types

Nigiri

Nigiri is a pile of sushi rice, finished with a bit of fish or shellfish, sometimes held together by a thin strip of seaweed. Simple, elegant, and allows the fish to shine on its own.

Maki Rolls

Rolling sushi in sheets of seaweed and cutting them into bite-sized pieces. Popular fillings include fresh tuna and salmon as well as vegetables and tempura. Variants include futomaki (thick rolls), hosomaki (thin rolls), and uramaki (inside-out rolls, rice outside).

Sashimi

Sashimi is pretty much just sliced raw fish or seafood, valued for its freshness and being the perfect texture. Technically, this does not make it sushi because it does not have rice with it, but it is often served alongside sushi.

Specialty & Fusion Rolls

Sushi chefs in the modern age have minted hundreds of rolls themselves based on Japanese techniques that are mixed with flavors from all over the globe. The rolls may possess spicy sauces, garnishes that are offbeat, or even unusual combinations.
